In the context of the ISO 14000 suite of standards, a statement by an organisation of its intentions and principles in relation to its overall environmental performance. To be compliant with the ISO 14001 standard, an Environmental Policy must conform to the following:

  1. Approval by and periodically reviewed by top management
  2. Commitment to comply with legal and other requirements
  3. Commitment to prevent pollution
  4. Commitment to continual improvement
  5. Available to the public
  6. Documented, implemented and maintained
  7. Communicated throughout the organisation

The Environmental Policy defines the scope of the EMS, provides a framework for setting of its environmental objectives and targets, and defines the limits within which those are to be achieved.
