Demographic greening and misdirection

A form of misdirection in which advertisers seek to direct market attention away from their core business activities, by focusing advertising on topics unrelated to those activities. For instance, fossil fuel companies variously (1) legitimize fossil fuel interests’ social license to operate; (2) distract attention away from firms’ core business roles, responsibilities, and contributions to the climate crisis; and (3) market brands as exclusive, desirable, and relevant.
