An autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise. (International Cooperative Alliance). Co-operatives, or ‘co-ops’, are designed to be people-centred enterprises – they are owned and run by and for their members, who use the structure to work towards their shared economic and social goals. Co-ops are used to facilitate collaboration in a democratic and equal way; members participate by a ‘one member, one vote’ rule, and their voting rights are equal regardless of the how much capital they have invested.
